# Troubleshooting Common Issues on Your Digital Totem

> Step-by-step solutions for common digital totem problems including power, audio, video, and connectivity issues. Contact support if problems persist.

Most issues with your digital totem can be resolved quickly by following the steps below. This guide covers the most frequently encountered problems across three categories — general operation, audio, and video — with clear, actionable solutions for each. Work through the relevant accordion section before contacting technical support.

## General

<Accordion title="Totem cannot be turned on">
 Work through the following checks in order:

 1. Verify that the wall outlet is functioning — test it with another device.
 2. Check the power switch located on the cable or at the rear of the unit and confirm it is in the **ON** position.
 3. Ensure the power button is being pressed fully and held for the required duration.
 4. If the totem still does not power on after completing the above steps, contact Totem Digital Romania technical service for further diagnosis.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="No image is displayed and no sound is produced">
 When the totem appears completely unresponsive:

 1. Check all internal video and audio connections to make sure they are seated correctly and undamaged.
 2. Confirm that the screen itself is switched on — the screen power may be independent of the main system power.
 3. Verify that the correct video input source is selected on the display.
 4. Perform a full system restart and observe whether the issue recurs.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Images appear slowly when the totem starts">
 This is **normal behaviour** during startup. The operating system and DIGIMAP/SiteKiosk software need time to load all components, initialise services, and fetch content before the display becomes fully responsive. No action is required — allow the system to complete its boot sequence.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Cannot connect external devices">
 If a USB or other external device is not being recognised:

 1. Check that the device is compatible with the operating system installed on the totem.
 2. Try connecting the device to a different USB port on the unit.
 3. Restart the totem with the external device already connected, then check whether it is detected on boot.
 4. Open the operating system's device manager to check whether the correct drivers are installed for the device.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Totem turns off suddenly">
 Unexpected shutdowns can have several causes — work through each possibility:

 * **Overheating** — Check that all cooling fans are running and that ventilation grilles are clear of dust and obstructions. For outdoor units, verify that the A/C module is operating correctly.
 * **Power supply problems** — Inspect all power connections from the wall outlet through to the internal components. Ensure the supply voltage is stable.
 * **Power saving settings** — Review the power management configuration in the operating system and in SITEKIOSK ONLINE to confirm that an aggressive sleep or shutdown policy is not triggering the behaviour.
 * **Hardware fault** — If none of the above resolves the issue, contact Totem Digital Romania technical service for a hardware inspection.
</Accordion>

## Audio

<Accordion title="No sound while running">
 If the totem is running but producing no audio output:

 1. Check the system volume level and confirm it is not set to zero.
 2. Ensure the audio is not muted in the operating system's sound settings or within the running application.
 3. Inspect the speaker connections to verify they are secure and undamaged.
 4. Test with a different audio file or source to determine whether the issue is content-specific.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="No output from one speaker">
 If audio is only coming from one side:

 1. Check the audio balance (left/right pan) setting in the operating system sound controls and ensure it is centred.
 2. Test with a known stereo audio file to confirm whether both channels are active.
 3. Physically inspect the connection for the silent speaker to make sure the cable is secure.
 4. If the problem persists after the above steps, contact Totem Digital Romania service for a hardware inspection of the speaker and amplifier.
</Accordion>

## Video

<Accordion title="Horizontal or vertical bars appear, or images fade">
 Visual artefacts on the display are often caused by a signal or interference problem:

 1. Check all video cables between the PC and the display for damage, and reseat both ends firmly.
 2. Adjust the screen resolution and refresh rate in the operating system display settings to match the screen's native specification.
 3. Identify and remove any sources of electromagnetic interference near the totem (motors, large transformers, unshielded cabling).
 4. If the artefacts persist after the above steps, contact Totem Digital Romania technical service.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Ghost images appear when the totem is turned off">
 Faint ghost images immediately after power-down can be a **normal, temporary effect** caused by residual charge in the display panel — this typically fades within a few seconds.

 If the ghost images are visible while the screen is active, or if they are permanent and do not disappear, this may indicate **burn-in**. To address and prevent this:

 * Switch to varied, dynamic content rather than static images.
 * Activate the screen saver and set an appropriate inactivity timeout in SITEKIOSK ONLINE.
 * Contact technical service if the burn-in is severe.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Screen appears extremely dark despite power being on">
 If the display is powered but very dim:

 1. Adjust the brightness setting in the screen's on-screen display (OSD) menu or in the operating system display settings.
 2. Check whether any power saving or battery saver profile is reducing the backlight intensity.
 3. Verify that the backlight is actually functioning — if the screen is completely black but the panel is on, the backlight may have failed.
 4. Contact Totem Digital Romania service for a diagnosis if the backlight is faulty.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title=""No Signal" appears on screen">
 This message means the display is not receiving a video signal from the PC:

 1. Check the video cable connecting the PC to the screen — ensure it is fully inserted at both ends.
 2. Confirm that the PC is powered on and has completed its boot sequence.
 3. Verify that the correct input source is selected on the display (HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, etc.).
 4. Disconnect and reconnect the video cable at both ends, then check again.
</Accordion>
