# Network Connections: Ethernet and Wi-Fi Setup Guide

> Configure a wired Ethernet or wireless Wi-Fi connection for your digital totem. A wired connection is recommended for maximum stability and performance.

Your digital totem requires a network connection to deliver online content, receive remote management commands through SITEKIOSK ONLINE, and keep the DIGIMAP application up to date. While both wired Ethernet and wireless Wi-Fi connections are supported, a wired connection is strongly recommended — it provides greater stability, lower latency, and eliminates the reliability issues that can arise from Wi-Fi signal fluctuations in busy public environments.

## Connection Methods

    A wired Ethernet connection offers the best performance and reliability for your digital totem. Use this method wherever a network point is available near the installation site.

    <Steps>
      <Step title="Locate the Ethernet Port">
        Find the Ethernet (RJ45) port on the back panel of the totem. Refer to the hardware diagram in your product documentation if you are unsure of its location.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Connect the Cable to the Totem">
        Insert one end of a UTP Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable firmly into the totem's Ethernet port until you hear it click into place.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Connect the Cable to the Network">
        Plug the other end of the cable into a port on your router, network switch, or wall-mounted network outlet.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Automatic Detection">
        The operating system will automatically detect the wired connection and configure the network interface. No manual steps are required in most standard network environments.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Verify the Connection">
        Open the Windows network settings to confirm that the connection is active and that an IP address has been assigned. A network icon in the system tray will indicate a successful connection.
      </Step>
    </Steps>

    <Warning>
      Do not disconnect the network cable while the totem is operating and actively processing or transmitting important data. Unexpected disconnection can interrupt ongoing transactions, content updates, or remote management sessions.
    </Warning>

  <Tab title="Wi-Fi">
    If a wired connection is not practical at your installation site, your totem supports wireless Wi-Fi connectivity. Ensure the installation location has adequate signal strength before relying on Wi-Fi for permanent operation.

    <Steps>
      <Step title="Access Network Settings">
        From the Windows taskbar or Start menu, open the **Settings** application and navigate to **Network & Internet**.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Select Wi-Fi">
        Click on **Wi-Fi** or **Wireless Networks** in the left-hand navigation panel and ensure that Wi-Fi is switched on.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Search for Your Network">
        Click **Show available networks** to display a list of detected wireless networks. Locate your organisation's network in the list.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Enter the Access Password">
        Select your network and click **Connect**. When prompted, enter the Wi-Fi password and confirm. Check the **Connect automatically** option if you want the totem to reconnect to this network after restarts.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Wait for Confirmation">
        Windows will authenticate with the network and obtain an IP address. The status beneath the network name will change to **Connected** once the process is complete.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Test the Connection">
        Open a browser or use the SITEKIOSK administration panel to confirm that internet access is working correctly.
      </Step>
    </Steps>

## Network Setup Tips

<Accordion title="Security">
  * Use networks protected with strong, unique passwords (WPA2 or WPA3 for Wi-Fi).
  * Avoid connecting the totem to unsecured public networks or networks shared with untrusted devices.
  * Update network passwords regularly and revoke access for devices that are no longer in use.
  * Consider placing the totem on a dedicated network VLAN to isolate it from other sensitive systems.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Performance">
  * Prefer a wired Ethernet connection whenever possible for the most consistent performance.
  * If using Wi-Fi, verify the signal strength at the installation location before finalising the mount — walls, floors, and other obstacles can significantly reduce signal quality.
  * Ensure that the available bandwidth on the network is sufficient to support content delivery, remote management, and any other connected devices sharing the connection.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Configuration">
  * Note the IP address assigned to the totem during initial setup — you may need it for remote management or firewall configuration.
  * If your network environment requires a fixed address, configure a static IP in Windows network settings or via a DHCP reservation on your router.
  * Test the network connection regularly, particularly after any changes to your network infrastructure, to ensure uninterrupted totem operation.
